Cottage style decorating is one of my favorite design styles.   The key to this light and clean look is to stick with a monochromatic color scheme of whites and neutrals adding pops of bright pastels as accents.  Combining slip covered furniture, painted antiques and just the right accessories without any clutter will result in a light and airy feeling space.  Here are some examples of cottage style done right.
